Nigerian actor and skit maker Mr Macaroni has opened up on why he recently reduced his public criticism of the government, revealing that years of backlash, threats and repeatedly raising the same concerns left him exhausted.
The entertainer, whose real name is Debo Adebayo, made the clarification after Wazobia FM resurfaced an interview in which he spoke about the threats he faced during his activism around the #EndSARS period.
Mr Macaroni explained that the interview was recorded more than two years ago, but maintained that many of the issues he discussed remain relevant.
According to him, the threats were not the only reason he decided to take a break from regular political commentary. He said he had become tired of repeatedly raising concerns without seeing sustained public pressure for change.
“There is nothing I will say now that I haven’t already said hundred times over,” he said in a post reported by The PUNCH.
The actor also expressed frustration over what he described as Nigerians’ tendency to complain about problems and then quickly move on. He argued that citizens would need to remain engaged if they wanted to demand accountability from those in government.
Mr Macaroni further recalled the personal risks associated with his activism. He said his involvement in the #EndSARS protests came with serious threats, which caused concern within his family. According to him, his family even considered having him leave the country for his safety, but he chose to remain in Nigeria.
He also said that speaking publicly about government policies often resulted in him being attacked by some of the very Nigerians he believed he was advocating for.
The entertainer said a strongly worded statement he made in March 2026 about President Bola Tinubu’s administration marked a point when he decided to take a break from his regular political commentary.
However, Mr Macaroni stressed that his break should not be interpreted as a permanent withdrawal from social issues.
He said he wants to use the period to focus on himself and his artistic work, while suggesting that he would be willing to speak out again when he believes Nigerians are ready to sustain the pressure for change.
“I am only tired of saying the same thing over and over again,” he said, adding that he would be ready to speak again when Nigerians are ready.
The latest comments have renewed attention on Mr Macaroni’s journey from entertainment into social commentary, particularly his involvement in conversations surrounding governance, citizens’ rights and youth participation.
For now, the actor appears to be taking a step back from the political spotlight while concentrating on his career and redefining his artistic direction.
