British singer Ed Sheeran is facing growing attention and controversy as his Loop Tour continues in the United States following the removal of rapper Macklemore from the tour and the subsequent withdrawal of other supporting acts.
Sheeran is scheduled to return to the stage in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 19, with his performance at Lincoln Financial Field going ahead despite the disruption to his touring lineup.
The controversy began after Macklemore made pro-Palestinian remarks during his performance at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium earlier this month. Following the remarks, Macklemore was removed from the remaining U.S. dates of Sheeran’s tour.
Sheeran subsequently addressed the situation, saying the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour’s promoter and venues rather than by him personally. He said venue owners had indicated that upcoming shows could be affected if Macklemore remained on the bill.
“I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict,” Sheeran said in a statement, while explaining that he generally prefers his concerts to remain focused on bringing people together through music.
The fallout did not end with Macklemore’s departure. Several other artists connected to the tour subsequently withdrew. Finneas, Aaron Rowe and Lukas Graham were among those who announced their exits, with the decisions coming amid criticism over Macklemore’s removal. Reuters also reported that Sheeran’s own touring band withdrew from the U.S. tour.
The developments have turned Sheeran’s otherwise music-focused stadium tour into a wider debate about artists, concerts and political expression. Macklemore has defended his comments and announced plans to donate $1 million from his tour earnings to Palestinian relief organizations.
Despite the controversy, Sheeran’s tour is continuing. The Philadelphia concert remains scheduled, although the supporting lineup has changed significantly following the departures.
As Sheeran prepares to continue the Loop Tour, the situation has placed renewed attention on the boundaries between live entertainment, artists’ personal views and the expectations surrounding major international concert events.
